The movie is based on the novel Chupke Chupke written by O. Henry. The film tells the story of Seth Dharamdas, a man who owns an old house near the sea. His life's desire is to be with his girl of many years, but her mother will not allow them to marry because he does not have any money or occupation. His father had hoped that he would follow in his footsteps and become a priest so he starts training Seth Dharamdas for priesthood via postcards of mantras and religious images which are sent from America to India. Seth Dharamdas becomes a priest and marries his girl, but destiny has a twist in store for him. Someone knocks on the door one day and Seth Dharamdas finds a baby lying outside the door. The baby is Shankar, the son of Seth Dharamdas' wife from another man she had an affair with before her marriage to Seth Dharamdas. To protect his marriage and his priesthood, he keeps Shankar with him, pretending that he is his own son too. This is a secret that neither of them can share with anyone else. The secret becomes a huge burden for both of them as time passes. And then one day Seth Dharamdas' wife dies and he is left all alone to look after Shankar. Shankar grows up and falls in love with a girl called Devyani whose father owns a hardware store. He turns out to be a genius and soon starts running a small business. The same year his father also dies, leaving him all alone with his mother. And then one day Devyani's brother who works as an accountant for Seth Dharamdas' father comes to meet Shankar and has got him involved in all their financial transactions as his representative. When Shankar starts to find out these things, he is both angry and sad. He tells Devyani about them and she too gets angry. She meets Seth Dharamdas' mother who admires her for being so judicious. Shyamaben informs Seth Dharamdas of this so he goes to meet Devyani who has left their house following an argument with Shankar. It is shown that she has left for the city to live with her brother since she does not want anything to do with Shankar anymore. On the way there, Seth Dharamdas sees that Shankar is riding a bullock cart and is being hit by it with a stick as if being punished by nature itself. Shankar survives the horrific experience and goes back to his village, where he helps in taking care of his mother in addition to running his business. A relationship develops between Shankar and Devyani's aunt, who does not like Shankar for some reason, especially after she gets married. She starts having an affair with the man who used to work for Seth Dharamdas' father. Seth Dharamdas' father dies just as Shankar is about to start running his business on his own, but before he can succeed in doing so, someone knocks on the door once again. Devyani's brother comes back with her. cfa1e77820
